Frequently asked questions
Every question about Rally
Formats, registration, scores, scheduling, pricing and leagues: answers grouped by topic.
Getting started
Do I need an account just to try it?
No. You can play the full tournament, resume results on this device and print the bracket without an account. An account is for registration and shared links.
Does Rally work well on a phone?
Yes. The bracket, standings and score entry are built phone-first — that’s where most spectators and scorekeepers actually use it during a real tournament.
How does the random team generator work?
It shuffles your list with the Fisher-Yates algorithm, driven by your browser’s secure random number generator, then deals the names into teams. Every name has the same chance of landing in any team.
What if the teams can’t all be the same size?
Teams differ by one name at most: 10 names in 3 teams gives 4, 3 and 3. When you pick a team size, the leftover is spread across the teams instead of left alone in a small one: 10 names with a team size of 3 gives 3, 3, 2 and 2.
Can I paste names from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Copy a column from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers and paste it: one name per line. Repeated names are flagged, and one click removes them.
Can I draw again?
Yes. “Draw again” reshuffles the same list as many times as you like. Each draw is independent of the previous one.
How many names can I use?
Up to 500 names, enough for a class, a work team or a big club tournament.
Do I need an account to draw teams?
No. Only the “Create a tournament with these teams” link asks you to log in, because a tournament needs an organizer.
Does the scoreboard work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded: scoring needs no network. Open the page before you leave for the field and it stays usable even with no signal.
Is my game saved?
It stays in your browser, on this device, and it is still there if you close the page by mistake. It is never sent to a server. “New game” resets it.
How do I keep the screen on for a tablet?
During a game the screen stays on when your browser allows it. “Full screen” enlarges the numbers for a tablet set near the boards; it is not available on every phone.
Can I fix a round, and do I need an account?
“Undo last round” removes the most recent round, as many times as you need. No account is asked: the scoreboard is free, and only the link to a Rally tournament leads to sign-up.
How many steps does creating a tournament take?
Five. General information, format, registration and teams, day planning (optional), then a summary. Before step one, a dialog offers four starting points and a sport — both optional. They prefill what follows; they decide nothing permanently.
What does “Save as template” carry over?
The format and the settings. Never the teams, the courts or the time window: a template describes how you play, not the edition you just finished. The ⋯ menu also offers “Duplicate now” if you want to start again straight away.
Is Rally a good Challonge alternative?
For in-person sports, yes: Rally generates the schedule on your courts and time slots (rest, turnaround, availability), with no ads, and also runs season-based leagues. For esports, paid registration or player profiles, Challonge remains the better fit.
Do we need to install an app?
No. Rally runs in the browser: create the tournament, share the bracket link and everyone follows results live on their phone.
Is there an app to run a cornhole tournament?
Rally is a free cornhole tournament app that runs in the browser. It handles signups, the bracket, a schedule across your sets of boards and live standings. There is nothing to install and no account for players.
Formats and brackets
Which tournament formats are supported?
Rally supports Round Robin, multiple pools with finals, single elimination, double elimination and the Swiss system.
What’s the difference between a bracket and a tournament tree?
None here — both describe the same thing: the structure showing who plays whom, round after round, down to a champion.
Can I switch formats after I’ve started?
Yes, before you start. Once the local tournament begins, its format and teams are locked because the standings and bracket depend on results already entered.
How many teams can I put in a bracket?
The try-it-out generator takes 2 to 32 teams, and at least 3 for double elimination. That ceiling belongs to the page, not the product: past it a round robin runs over 400 matches and stops being readable in a browser. A tournament created in Rally has no such limit.
Which format works best for a pickleball tournament?
Round robin pool play with a finals bracket is the most common pickleball format: every team gets guaranteed matches, then the top teams meet in a knockout bracket. Rally also supports single and double elimination.
What if there isn’t time for a full round robin?
That’s exactly what the Swiss system is for. You set the number of rounds the day allows, and each round matches teams with comparable results instead of making everyone play everyone. With 16 teams, 4 rounds are enough to produce standings where a full round robin would take 15 — and no team leaves the gym early.
Can we play pool games and then a finals bracket?
Yes. The round robin format ranks every team, then the top teams advance to a knockout finals stage. The number of qualifying teams is configurable.
How many teams can a beer pong bracket hold?
As many as your party brings: the bracket automatically handles byes when the number of teams is not a power of two.
Single or double elimination for beer pong night?
Single elimination is fast; double elimination gives everyone a second chance through the losers bracket and keeps people playing longer. Rally supports both.
Which format should a spikeball tournament use?
A round robin pool guarantees every duo several matches, then the top teams move into a finals bracket. It is the standard roundnet tournament format, and Rally runs it end to end.
Which format works best for cornhole?
Doubles round robin — every team plays everyone — then a double elimination bracket for the qualifiers. Rally builds the pool, the standings and the bracket without a spreadsheet.
How do I make a cornhole tournament bracket?
Add your teams of two, pick double elimination, and Rally draws the cornhole tournament bracket with byes for you. For a bigger field, start with round robin pool play and build the final bracket from the standings. The free generator on the home page lets you try it with no account.
Which format works best for a bonspiel?
Round robin pool play followed by a single or double elimination bracket for the qualifiers is most common. A small weekend bonspiel can run round robin alone, with no playoff stage. Rally builds the pool, standings and bracket without a spreadsheet.
What is a curling bonspiel?
A bonspiel is a curling tournament, often a weekend of games between rinks from several clubs. Most run round robin draws, then playoffs. In Rally you set up your sheets of ice and draws, then add the teams. The pool, standings and bracket follow.
Swiss system
What can I preview for a Swiss tournament?
Add your teams and round count and Rally produces the opening pairings immediately, then creates each following round after the previous results so teams with similar records meet.
How many rounds should a Swiss tournament have?
The usual rule is the base-2 logarithm of your team count, rounded up: 8 teams need 3 rounds, 16 need 4, 32 need 5. That is the minimum for a single unbeaten team to emerge. Rally suggests that number up front and lets you change it — one or two extra rounds tighten the standings, though you can never exceed the team count minus one.
Can the same two teams meet twice?
Not while an unplayed opponent is still available — that is the format’s core rule, and Rally holds to it round after round. In an extreme case, many rounds for few teams, no fresh matchup may be left; Rally then replays the closest possible pairing rather than stalling your tournament.
What happens with an odd number of teams?
One team sits out each round, and that bye counts as a win. Rally picks it from the teams that have not had one yet, starting from the bottom of the standings, so nobody sits out twice before everyone has sat out once.
How are teams on equal points separated?
By strength of schedule. On equal points, the team that faced tougher opponents ranks higher — Rally adds up the scores of the opponents played, dropping the best and the worst, then compares that same total with nothing dropped if the tie holds, before falling back to point differential, the head-to-head result and finally the starting seed.
Can a confirmed Swiss result be corrected?
No, and it is a real limitation to weigh before picking this format. Every round is paired from the previous round’s results, so changing a score afterwards would invalidate matchups already drawn. Double-check the score before confirming a game — Rally’s other formats still allow corrections.
Swiss system or round robin?
Both rank everyone without knocking anyone out, but a round robin plays every possible matchup — 23 rounds for 24 teams — where Swiss needs 5 for the same field. Pick round robin when the group is small and the day is long; pick Swiss when the group is large and time is short.
Can Swiss rounds seed the finals bracket?
Yes. When the field is too large for complete pool play, a few Swiss rounds rank every duo without knocking anyone out: each round brings together teams with similar records. Those standings can seed a finals bracket, as some roundnet events do. In Rally, that transition is manual: create a separate elimination tournament and carry over the standings order.
What is the difference between Swissholio and a Blind Draw?
A Blind Draw forms the doubles teams before competition by drawing partners at random. Swissholio is the competition format that follows: partners stay together, play several rounds and meet an opponent with a comparable record each round. In Rally, use the partner draw to build teams, then the Swiss system for that round-by-round format.
Registration and sharing
Do spectators need to create an account?
No. The spectator link is public and read-only. It shows matches, standings and brackets without granting organizer access.
Does online registration require an account?
No. The registration invitation lets a player or team submit a request without an account. The organizer keeps final approval.
Why is one of my teams not counted?
Because it has fewer players than the tournament’s minimum roster. That minimum is set in step 3: at 1 or more, a team with no player stays a draft — not counted among admitted teams, not paired; at 0, the default for “Teams only”, an empty team is admitted and plays.
What is the difference between the spectator link and the public page?
The spectator link is a read-only address you can revoke or regenerate at any time. The public page is a stable, indexable address, separate from that link. The Share tab also carries the score-entry link, the player invitation and co-organizers by email.
Do players need to create an account?
No. Captains, scorekeepers and spectators use a link. Only the organizer has an account.
Do players need an account to register?
No. Share a registration link and every player or pair submits their entry without an account. You keep final approval before the draw.
How do I handle volleyball team registration?
Open a registration invitation: each captain submits their team and roster without an account. You approve teams and tournament capacity is enforced automatically.
How do duos register?
Share the registration link: each duo submits their team without an account. You approve entries and launch the draw when everyone is ready.
Can other teams follow the results?
Yes. The public spectator link shows matches, standings and the bracket live: every team knows when and against whom they play next.
How do teams follow the tournament?
Every team follows the public spectator link: upcoming games, standings and the bracket, live. A scorekeeper link also lets a volunteer enter scores.
What is a blind draw, and can Rally run one?
A blind draw is a night where players sign up solo and partners are drawn on the spot instead of being picked ahead of time. In Rally, your approved player pool goes through the partner draw: say how many players per team, and Rally pairs them at random and names each team after its players. Re-draw as often as you like, swap two players by hand, then confirm. Rally tries not to rebuild a pair already drawn in the same tournament — with a small pool that is not always possible, and it says so plainly instead of refusing to draw.
Scores and standings
Can a scorekeeper enter scores without being an organizer?
Yes. The scorekeeper link only allows score entry. The scorekeeper does not need an account and cannot access organizer settings.
How does cancellation scoring work in cornhole?
Each team adds up its points for the round, then the smaller total is subtracted from the larger. Only the team with more points scores, and it scores the difference. If the two totals match, nobody scores.
How many points is a cornhole bag worth?
A bag in the hole is worth 3 points and a bag that stays on the board is worth 1. A bag on the ground or off the board scores nothing. Each team throws four bags a round, so the most a team can score in one round is 12.
What score do you play cornhole to?
To 21: the first team to reach 21 wins, even if its last round takes it past 21. For a shorter game, change “Game to” on the scoreboard, anywhere from 1 to 99.
Can I customize tiebreakers in Rally?
Yes. In round robin and pool play, you choose the primary criterion, the points scheme and the tiebreaker order: point differential, points for, points against, head-to-head, wins.
How do I show live scores during the tournament?
Share the public spectator link: matches, standings and the bracket update live on every phone and on the venue screen, with nothing to install.
Who enters scores during matches?
You can, or one scorekeeper per court via the scorekeeper link: they enter scores with no account and no access to organizer settings. Standings update live.
Do standings handle points and goal differential?
Yes. Standings apply a win/draw/loss point system with tiebreakers by points, differential and goals for, updating with every finalized score.
How is a cornhole tournament scored?
Cancellation scoring is standard: 3 points for a bag in the hole, 1 point for a bag on the board, and only the round differential counts. Games go to 21. In Rally the scorekeeper enters each round and standings follow automatically.
Who enters scores between boards?
One volunteer per set of boards using the scorekeeper link: they enter rounds with no account and no access to organizer settings. Every other team immediately knows when and where they play next.
What are the rules of a cornhole tournament?
Games are played in doubles to 21 with cancellation scoring. A bag in the hole scores 3, a bag on the board 1, and only the round differential counts. Most tournaments run round robin pool play, then a double elimination bracket. Count a single game on the free cornhole scoreboard.
How do standings work during a bonspiel?
Every round robin win, loss or tie updates standings automatically, and qualifiers for the playoff round are decided by your tiebreaker rules. In Rally the scorekeeper enters end-by-end scoring and standings follow with no manual math.
Who enters scores between sheets of ice?
One volunteer per sheet using the scorekeeper link: they enter scores with no account and no access to organizer settings. Every other team immediately knows when and on which sheet they play their next draw.
Schedule
Does the generator schedule match times or courts?
No. It builds the round-by-round pairings — who plays whom, and in what order — but it doesn’t assign a time or a court. A Rally tournament carries a start date, an end date and a venue; splitting the matches across the day stays your call.
Do players see the schedule as soon as it is generated?
No. “Generate schedule” produces a draft only you can see, along with its diagnosis. Nothing reaches anyone until you press Publish, and that confirmation first lists what changes and who will be notified.
Can a match be moved after publishing?
Yes. Click the match, pick a court and a time, then “Preview”: the server checks before writing and tells you whether the move applies. “Move” confirms it. A checkbox locks the match to that slot, and the tab also offers Reschedule and Recompute everything.
How do I set up the games for a dek hockey tournament?
Pick the round robin format: Rally generates every pool game, then builds the finals stage from the standings in one click. To assign rinks and start times, configure your rinks and time slots, then request schedule generation once the tournament is launched. This step is optional; you can then move a game without shifting the others.
How many ends does a club curling game play?
Club bonspiels standardly play 8 ends, for a game of roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. That length is what bounds how many draws fit in a day; Rally uses it to space out a team’s games across your sheets of ice.
How do sheets of ice and draws map to Rally’s scheduling?
Sheets of ice are your courts in Rally, and draws are your time slots: set up as many as your club has, then request schedule generation once the tournament is launched. This step is optional; you can then move a game without shifting the others.
Pricing
Is the bracket generator actually free?
Yes — trying the generator above needs no account and no credit card. Creating an account to save and run a real tournament is free too.
Is Rally really free?
Yes. One active tournament at a time, with every format, scheduling, registration, live scores and exports. The $9 CAD/month plan only lifts the volume limit.
What counts as an active tournament?
The free plan includes one active tournament at a time. A tournament finished less than 30 days ago still counts — except the most recent one: finish your tournament and you can start another right away.
Can I cancel my Unlimited tournaments subscription?
Yes, at any time. Your subscription stays active until the end of the paid period, then your account automatically returns to the free tier.
Does Rally take a commission on registrations?
No. Rally never touches player money: Rally only facilitates the organization — any payments between an organizer and their participants are settled outside of Rally.
What will show on my card statement?
Your card statement will show RALLY.
Are prices in Canadian dollars?
Yes. Every price shown is in Canadian dollars (CAD), before tax.
Leagues
Does Rally handle leagues, not just tournaments?
Yes. Rally Leagues runs full seasons: dated schedule, divisions, standings, playoffs, season close and rollover. The first season is free.
What does Rally Leagues include?
Manage teams, divisions, schedules and results. Share your published season with your teams.
Which sports can I organize?
Curling, cornhole, recreational hockey, softball, volleyball and pickleball. Each sport offers rules you can adapt to your club.
How much does Rally Leagues cost?
Your first season is free. After that, the organization subscription starts at the rate shown on our pricing page.
Does the free season last only 30 days?
No, your whole first season is free, whatever its duration. You start paying from the following season.
Can Rally build my league schedule?
Yes. The league scheduler places games around your surfaces and game nights. Review every team’s games, then publish the schedule.
Can I change the schedule or postpone a game?
Yes. Prepare changes, review their impact on teams, then publish your updated schedule.
Do teams need an account to view the season?
No. After publication, share your season link to view the schedule, results and standings without an account.
How is a league different from a Rally tournament?
A tournament serves a standalone competition. A league organizes recurring games with divisions and season standings.
How do I start my first season?
Use the form to tell us about your league. The setup assistant then guides you from teams to schedule publication.
Does Rally Leagues have an API?
Yes. The REST API and signed webhooks are included in the Leagues plan. The documentation is on the Developers page.
Can I run a curling league with Rally?
Yes. A tournament suits a one-off bonspiel. For a curling league that plays every week, Rally Leagues keeps the whole season. You get the weekly draw schedule across your sheets of ice and standings that carry on from week to week.
