What is a round robin tournament?

In a round robin tournament, every team plays every other team. Nobody is knocked out, so every team gets the same number of matches.

Results go into a standings table. The team with the most points after the last round wins, and tiebreakers settle equal records.

A double round robin, also called home and away, repeats every pairing a second time with the sides swapped.

How does a round robin work?

  1. Count the teams. Each team plays n − 1 opponents, and the tournament has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches in total.
  2. Split the matches into rounds. In each round, every team plays once, so the matches of a round can run at the same time.
  3. With an odd number of teams, one team rests in each round. That is a rest, not a win.
  4. Rotate the teams round after round. The circle method keeps one team fixed, turns the others one step and pairs the top row against the bottom row.
  5. Share the courts. If a round has more matches than courts, the round takes a second time slot.
